Transmission Diagnostic Trouble Codes

Introduction

Vehicles 1996 and newer are OBD-II compliant - meaning these vehicles are equipped with an on-board diagnostics system called OBD-II.  The OBD-II system monitors various vehicle systems and subsystems and sets a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) when a problem (or fault) is detected.  Your vehicle's check engine light turns on when a diagnostic trouble code is set.

When the check engine light illuminates, an OBD-II scanner is used to retrieve the diagnostic trouble code(s) that are stored in the system.  The most common diagnostic trouble codes begin with the letter "P", which stands for Powertrain.  Powertrain (or "P") DTCs include the engine, transmission and emissions systems.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0700 through P0799 are transmission related codes.  Any code within this range point to a transmission related fault.
